i think the key player is mitch mcconnell to watch. we're getting potentially more information about what is happening next. our capitol hill producer deidre walsh was there when some of the leaders returned and she spoke with nancy pelosi who said this meeting was constructive and candid. here's what is especially interesting. nancy pelosi told reporters that the president led a meeting that ended with senators reid and mcconnell trying to work something out between the two of them. now it seems like we've gone from a process that was president obama and speaker boehner and then today to five leaders back to two. and those two, for the moment, seem to be senator reid and senator mccon until. also, i had a source in senator mcconnell's office who said we should be getting a statement from the republican leader of the senate any time now. so that statement will tell us a lot, candy. >> it will. but we also know that even though it's in the senate hands now which is basically where speaker boehner tossed it when he couldn't get his plan

we spent this time, joe biden and mitch mcconnell spent all this time trying to get an agreement. what are we supposed to do with this? this leaves the question out there, could we go over the fiscal cliff entirely? we are teetering on the edge from where we stand now, it's a good possibility. i will say though, if john boehner wanted to take this bill and put it to the floor without amendments, essentially having a p profile in courage moment t would probably pass. from the republican i spoke to in the room, they said if there's an appetite for folks who have been around here for a while to get this over with, they can live to fight another day on the debt limit and on the government funding bill. but this would be a pr disaster for republicans. there is nowhere else for this bill to go. if the house gop tries to administration this with this short amount of time left, they feel, this member spoke to me and folks close to the speaker, they feel the claim woublame wo them. the sandy supplemental bill for the relief and the folks effected by the hurricane, that's tied up in this, t

>> well, joe biden and mitch mcconnell are older school politicians. they remember a time when compromise was how you close deals like this. and there are a lot of, i guess, mostly younger members up there who don't remember that time. they view their job is to go to washington and create conflict and have grid lock. that doesn't mean that their caucuses will certainly be with them. that is no surprise to me that vice president joe biden is talking with them. it is not a slam dunk, i suspect it will, especially if it passes the senate with a significantly bipartisan vote. you have some real deal makers. >> what do you think that this really means in your opinion, to the average american taxpayer? whether, you know, with the threat we may go over the cliff, and now we may really not. what difference did this really, really mean and if you could put it in plain words for us who are not economists, just explain what it means for all of us? >> well, first of all it means that if you're someone who is a beneficiary of long-term unemployment benefits, you're

you have negotiations led by the vice president and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. sources are telling us they are making some progress, but here's the catch. if a deal is reached, there is no guarantee it's going to pass. here's what democratic senator tom harkin said on the senate floor earlier this morning. >> if we're going to have some kind of a deal, the deal must be one that really does favor the middle class. the real middle class. those that are making 30,000, 50,000, 60,000, 70,000 a year. that's the real middle class in america. and as i see this thing developing, quite frankly, as i've said before, no deal is better than a bad deal, and this looks like a very bad deal the way it's he shaping up. >> we cover it from all angles. we have dana bash on capitol hill and jessica yellen at the white house. what do we expect the president to say? is he going to essentially lay out a deal here, something that they are working on, or do you think this is meant to push the negotiations, push the republicans a little bit harder? >> reporter: well, i'm advised that th
